Seeing the Same Position Posted week after week, month after month? What’s up?

Matt Rasamoto, www.drpunchman.com, Creative Technologist, Innovator and Creator for all things digital who I have worked with for years at AT&T/DTV, DaileyAdvertising and other fine orgs has an interesting question about Linkedin and job postings:

“I see jobs like “Director of Innovation” for the same company posted over and over.

Same position, new posting posted every week for MONTHS!”

Is it a warning sign that this position has too much turn over, and the management is terrible?

Does it mean that they can’t find the right candidate?

Is it worth applying/re-applying?

So what exactly is going on when you see this?

It could be any number of things.

  1. The position is in a semi hold - the organization isn’t quite ready to hire, but they feel it’s in their best interest to continue gathering resumes for when they are.

  2. They can’t find the right candidate!  They either don’t have consensus on what they need, hiring managers who know how to interview for it, or their ideal candidate target keeps moving.

  3. The hiring manager, and possibly entire team isn’t in place yet, but they want to start pipelining for when they are.

  4. It could be a sign of high turnover and a difficult work environment but sadly you won’t know that until you get into the interview process and do your due diligence.  And I feel it is very fair to ask why it has been open so long and what their hiring challenge is.

  5. The staffing for this role may have changed recruiter/owner - in that case they may be treating it as a fresh search, and starting from scratch.

In all of these cases I would reapply.  Most of these issues are about timing.  As right now 100’s of people are applying for every job, simply having your resume at the top of the cue may get you in line first.

Have you done your research?  Checked Glass Door?  Did you Linkin with anyone already there and ask about the role, the management?  Know someone who works there that you can ask for intel or can help you cut the line?

Now - did you walk up to the recruiting manager, HR, the possible hiring manager on LI and write a meaningful message about why you want this role and share your resume?

Cut the line!  Don’t be a passive job seeker.

As a recruiter I get excited when qualified talent directly lets me know their interest - you aren’t bothering us!  If you have done your homework, and are indeed a possible fit, that means I can shift my energy from resume sifting to ushering strong talent to my hiring managers.  Win win!

Keep applying intelligently, timing is everything.
